Die Forgings

As a global leader in industrial forgings, CAB Worldwide offers the industry's highest quality open die and closed die forgings from steel, iron, aluminum and other metals. We work with over three dozen ISO certified foundries located in the U.S., China, India, South Korea and South Africa that enables us to meet the demands of industries all over the world.

CAB's open die forging capabilities are ideally suited for the production of large, simple shaped parts but are also suitable for custom designed components. Our highly skilled engineering team works with 3D modeling to design parts that consistently exceed the expectations of our customers.

Closed die forgings require specially made dies for each component and are very cost effective for large production runs. As a full-service, state-of-the-art operation, CAB has the capabilities to manufacture a wide variety of parts through our worldwide strategic partner foundries.

The forging process is to shape metal using localized compressive forces through plastic deformation (heating and hammering). Open die forging is performed between flat dies with no precut profiles. Open-die forging can produce forgings from a few pounds up to more than 300,000 lbs. and 80 feet in length. Closed die forging pounds or presses metal between two dies (called tooling) that contain a precut profile of the desired part. Parts from a few ounces to 60,000 lbs. can be made using this process. Some smaller parts can actually be forged cold.

Forgings have high structural reliability when compared to a cast component. There are no internal gas pockets or voids that could cause unexpected failure under stress or impact. Often, the forging process assists in improving chemical segregation of the forging stock by moving centerline material to various locations throughout the forging. Forgings are typically used in automotive and trucks, off-highway and agricultural machines, etc. for connecting rods, crankshafts, transmission shafts, gears, spike harrow teeth, etc.

We supply open and closed die forgings to companies in the automotive, construction, hydraulics, industrial equipment, mining, power generation, oil and gas, water and wastewater industries. Working in both ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, we manufacture components that can withstand the industrial environment with reliability and durability.
